The number one reason that most diecutters are finding themselves in need of a rerule of their die is the lack of press maintenance. The single most common problem we have found in our many travels to diecutting facilities around the country has been that there is either very little to no press maintenance being done. Without this crucial step, all aspects of one’s diecutting will surely suffer. Although we as diemakers would love nothing more than to assist in improving our customers’ cutting quality, if the issue comes down to press maintenance there is not much we can do to fix the situation. Please remember to routinely maintain your press and ensure that all slugs and scrap are cleaned from the die often, otherwise you will face problems with your diecutting that cannot be resolved without either a rerule of your die or a new die. These are simple steps to save yourself from having to spend unnecessary money!

So today’s topic is on cutting Kevlar. We want to help with suggestions that will reduce costs and hopefully bring a new but simple insight before you begin working with Kevlar. It is recommended to use a clicker die of at least 1 1/4″ high when cutting Kevlar. If at all possible use a higher die as it will wear better and give more sharpening over the life of the die. Use a die maker that has experience in making dies for Kevlar. Don’t hesitate to ask your die maker for their experience and recommendations. Keep in mind that not all Kevlar is ballistic, which means not all dies will work the same. Heat resistant Kevlar for gloves will need a different bevel die than Kevlar for bullet proof vests.

Kevlar tends to wear down dies so factor in the need for multiple dies if you are intending on long cutting runs.

If you have any questions or suggestions for others on cutting Kevlar leave a comment!
